SOLAR ETCHING

 

These are all forms of printmaking which allows you to reproduce your ideas in print and pursue this medium further. All levels welcome                                                                        

 

 

 

Course Requirements

Things to bring
Protective clothing, apron/dustcoat/old shirt, cotton rags to clean up.
A large box of disposable rubber gloves from the supermarket
An assortment of tools such as scribes, scissors, scalpel knife, pens, pencil, cotton buds, masking tape and ruler, can come in handy if you already have them, but not all essential.
Important to bring a Folder approximately ( A3 ) size with tissue to take home your portfolio of finished prints.
Important to bring  2-3 sheets of quality printmaking paper
 (Rives BFK, Arches, Stonehenge, are some available from Art Shops.
NO water colour paper). These cut into 4 for safe handling/travel. You will be printing at least 10 - 15 prints or more. Bring assortments of drawings/photographs reproductions and your own art work with strong contrasted black and white tones. These can be developed for ideas as inspiration for your prints.
 
Drypoint technique: All materials will be provided for Drypoint by Seraphina.
 
Monprinting technique: Some materials and textures for Monoprinting will be provided by Seraphina.
 
Please bring additional materials such as embossed art papers, stiff fabrics, feathers, filigree fibers from the garden or lace if you already have them and would like to incorporate them in your monoprints. But remember ALL FOUND OBJECTS SHOULD NOT EXCEED 1 MM THICK TO GO THROUGH THE ETCHING PRESS. All plants, leaves or fibers to be dried and flattened between old telephone books
 
Solar Plate technique. 2 x Plates A6 (10 x 15 cm) size will be provided.
2 different A6 images can be photocopied onto clear transparencies (film) for Solar plate etching.  Use Photo text settings on the photocopier if available. Images can be reduced on the photocopier to A6 size if necessary. This can be done at  Officeworks for 80c includes transparencies. Camp creative photocopier will be available on the day.

Seraphina Martin

Seraphina Martin studied printmaking at the National Art School in Paris before moving to Sydney 30 years ago, to teach at the Sydney University Art Workshop. Seraphina was the recipient of the Moya Dyring Studio at the Cite des Arts in Paris in 1988.There, she studied the Viscosity printing at the Atelier 17 under William Hayter. Since 1994 she has developed non toxic technology called Solar Plate etching in her own art practice. In 2005 she was Artist in Residence at the Canberra School of Art, Canberra. In 2009, she was a Delegated for Australian printmakers at the International Print Biennale in France. She has taught printmaking at Meadowbank Tafe, Hornsby Tafe, and Penrith Tafe as well as Sydney Universityfor the  past 20 years. In 2011 she was invited as Artist in Residence at the Gov College of Art Calcutta and Kola Bhavan University,Shantineketan, West Bengal, India. She often teaches at the Hazelhurst Regional Gallery, Gymea, Botanic Gardens, Sydney, NSW Art Gallery, Sydney, Context Art, Blue Mountains, Sturt Winter School, Mittagong, and Huter Island Press, Hobart, Tasmania. Currently Seraphina teaches at Willoughby Art Centre, Willoughby, Bankstown Art Centre, Bankstown, Art Est school, Leichhardt, Sydney, SOFA school of Art Mosman. 

Seraphina has exhibited widely  and her work is represented in private and public collections in Australia and overseas
