The canoe comes as a complete kit with all plywood parts cut out ready to assemble - no sawing needed. We drill 5mm holes in the edges of the sheets, glue pairs of panels together using a jig to hold them steady, and then sew them all together with plastic cable ties. When we have the shape correct we glue and fit the gunwales (strips of timber along the tops of the sides), tape and glue the chines (joins) together with epoxy glue and fibreglass tape, then plane and sand everything smooth when the glue has cured. Sounds too easy? It is, although for a few days you will be kept very busy….but success is guaranteed!
Finished craft can be given a trial run on the Bellinger River on the last day. Some builders choose to do some painting of their canoes at the course, but most take them home for final sanding and painting.
Equipment- Course Requirements
Sense of humour! (Canoe builders laugh a lot!)
Cordless drill with 5mm drill bit and Phillips Head driver.
Pair of pliers for tightening cable ties.
Pair of saw horses or folding work benches. (We can supply some if needed.)
Old clothes and closed in shoes- no thongs or sandals.
Countersink drill bit.
Plastic gloves to avoid glue on hands.
Wood plane and several grades of sandpaper for smoothing timber.
Hand saw, hammer, chisel, woodworking clamps, and any general woodworking tools.
Canoe seat. Plastic chair minus legs (Council clean-ups are good), check out ‘canoe/kayak seats’ on Google Images for ideas, or try eBay for around $50.00. Seats are not provided, and aren’t necessary if you want to test your finished canoe in the Bellinger River.
Although certainly not needed, a belt sander, extension cord and eye/hearing protection will make a very quick job of cleaning up your canoe at the end. The canoe is also available as a 3.6m (12ft) model for those wanting something smaller. This size (crimson painted canoe in photos) will easily handle an 85kg adult and a very exuberant 25kg dog- I speak from experience! As this is not the standard size, anyone wanting a 3.6m version will need to let me know a month before Camp Creative. Same cost because the same number of plywood sheets are required, but the offcuts are large enough for a deck on your canoe. $240.00 for all materials to make one canoe (Does not include seat, paint or paddle.) When looking at this cost, consider that the cheapest complete and comparable commercial canoe kits (without CC’s personal building tuition!) start around $600.00.
If you wish to bring your own 1.8m x 30mm Tassie Oak dowel (about $20.00 from Bunnings) or similar to the course, we will provide the ply paddle blades and glue for you to make your own paddle.
