Bush Furniture Making

Participants will acquire the skills needed to produce all types of rustic furniture, including:

1 How to identify and acquire suitable timber

2 Basic design elements

3 Basic joinery techniques

4 Preparation of timber

5 The use of specialised tools in rustic furniture construction

6 Basic weaving, caning and upholstery

7 Timber finish treatments

The project will involve using all the skills needed in the construction of rustic furniture and upon completion of the course participants will be able to design and build any piece they can imagine, limited only by the requirements of sound joinery techniques.

 

DAY1 Overview of rustic furniture making, sourcing materials, tools needed and their use and basic design requirements. Participants will spend part of the day designing their own chair.

DAY2 Run through of each design and the requirements of construction. Selection and preparation of components. Beginning construction.

DAY3/4 Construction.

DAY5 Finishing of piece and discussion amongst students.

 

 

 

Course Requirements

A basic knowledge of tools would be helpful but not necessary. 

Participants are asked to bring, a 14 or 18V cordless drill, 16,18,20 and 25mm spade bits, an 8 or 12mm firmer chisel and sturdy comfortable footwear as they will be standing on concrete floors for 5 or 6 hours per day. All other materials will be provided and the cost for these (payable on commencement of the course) will be $70.

Leon has an extensive background working with timber, He has been one of the committee that has set up the new Bellingen Men’s Shed. This will also be the venue for this course within the grounds of Bellingen High School. Leon has a particular fascination for using native materials to make furniture that is authentic, unique and brings back the bush skills of the early colonial days. This is Leon's third year as a tutor at Camp Creative and his course is one of the first to fill up.
