You will learn traditional African drumming for djembe and dun duns plus songs and chants that accompany the rhythms, as well as drum technique, body percussion and the art of improvisation for the more advanced students. This African drumming course, helps boost enthusiasm and positivity, and encourages students to feel good about themselves by creating an atmosphere of fun, success, and being part of something special.

More about the course

You will learn traditional African drumming for djembe, dun duns and Bougarabou plus the many hand percussion instruments parts.

We will also learn the songs and chants that accompany the rhythms and along with their cultural significants.

During the course we will be work on your drumming technique for the drums you are using as well as body percussion and for the more advanced students, the art of improvisation.

You will also learn Afro Brazilian Samba and we will rock and rove the streets of Bellingen Carnival style.

We will be performing atThursday's Party in the Park and also at the Grand Finale concert on Friday night.

If you don't have your own drum you can use ours for a small fee or buy one of our amazing handmade traditional African Drums.

Chinta Reiss

Chinta Reiss

Chinta is a dynamic group facilitator, teacher and performing artist, with over 20 years experience. Chinta inspires greatness in his students and workshop participants. With his enthusiastic friendly style Chinta will create an uplifting rhythm charged experience and amazing student performances.  

Following his passion for drumming and music Chinta’s path led him to West Africa where he studied West African Drumming focusing on djembe, dun duns and bougarabou.  Chinta spent 2 years studying under master drummers at the Mandinka School of Performing Arts in the Gambia. Then travelled overland to Casamance Senegal to study under Bougarabou master Nui Nui Diedhiou and to Guinea-Bissau. He has also travelled to Mali West Africa and studied cultural music in Bamako the Dagon country and played with world renowned Cora play Toumani Diabate and his band at Bamako’s famous out door court yard venues. Chinta also travelled to East Africa following the drummers path to Zimbabwe and the Kori Kori drummers, Mozambique, Kenya and Zambia studying the Bantu Rhythms and songs.

Chinta has performed toured and recorded with many great artists and bands Habib Koité, Toumani Diabate, Ndiaye Rose, Mohamed Bangoura, Jean Paul Wobotai, Valanga Khoza,  Lamine Sonko, Pape M’Baye, Epizo Bangoura, King Marong just to name a few and recently performing with Mozambique’s international artist Berias Vasco Masseque as his lead drummer percussionist in his world acclaimed Afro Fusion Band.

He has taught in Australia and overseas, The Gambian Youth Project, Macquarie University, UNSW, Lismore Conservatorium of Music, Clarence Valley Conservatorium, Hong Kong Academy of performing Arts and much more.

He is director of an Australia wide interactive drumming and percussion company www.rhythmconnect.com.au specialising in performances, team building workshops, school incursions and community workshops and courses.

He is dedicated to sharing his rich knowledge of African drumming, culture and music to create community.
