Free-style Felting

“The meaning of Life is to find your gift. The purpose of Life is to give it” Pablo Picasso

This course is fantastic for beginners as well as those who have made Felt or done my course before. It is tactile, colourful, interesting, 2-Dimentional or 3-Dimentional and more! I have been making Felt for nearly 20 years, and have never been short of ideas. Felt is a fascinating medium to work with – everything from people’s homes to the shoes and clothes they wear, can and are made from Felt. Mankind produced Felt before we wove Cloth. It is a technique that defies technology, for it has hardly changed since it was first produced, whilst we were still Hunting and Gathering! It is a mesmerizing and alchemic process with end results that are always one of a kind. I invite you to join me!

More about the course

Students will have a Felt Library in the classroom to guide them. There will be practical demonstrations in wet and dry (also called needle) felting, two-dimensional and three-dimensional felting. They will have access to information booklets, containing the various techniques shown and discussed; along with some of the history and myths concerning felt. We will cover some basic art and colour theory, focusing on the elements and principles of design and colour mixing (this will be in the hand-out).

Students will learn how to think like a felter; how to make a hat mould from old bowls, or a bag mould from plastic placemats or ice-cream container lids; how to rebirth old woollen jumpers into felt works and why old lace doilies are awesome! From here, I will discuss individually with students what sort of felt work they would like to complete during the week; whether they simply want to experiment and play with materials and techniques to produce a one-of-a-kind Artist’s Book, and/or complete something wearable, or a wall-hanging. The students’ imagination is their only limitation, and I will do my best to gently push them outside their creative comfort zone; to think outside the box. Samantha Everett

Samantha Everett

Sam is passionate about felt-making because of the limitless possibilities one can explore through the medium. She has worked and trained extensively in the field of felt-making and plant dyeing. Sam lives and works on the mid-north coast where she runs felt-making workshops and is also involved in community support projects. This is Sam’s third year as a tutor at Camp Creative.

“My teaching philosophy is that there are no mistakes; there is no right or wrong way to do something, only ‘your’ way, and most importantly to have fun!”

“When I die, I want to go to the big Camp Creative in the sky! I love being here; there is nowhere else so accepting, inspiring, colourful and joyous as Camp Creative. My time here – whether I am teaching or not, has become my favourite annual holiday; where my batteries get recharged after the depletion of the previous 12 months. I practically count down the sleeps!!”
