Japanese Woodblock Printing

All equipment and materials are provided for this course and material cost of $90 payable to tutor at commencement of the course. If you have your own equipment for Ink Brush Painting please bring it along!

This is a very hands-on course. I am hoping to make this course as enjoyable and hands on as possible. I will take you through the process of relief printing and woodblock designing, cutting and printing so you can produce your own prints at home.

More about the course

Environmentally friendly water-based inks will be used for the hand printing segment of the course.

The key areas to be covered are:

• Brief history of printmaking

• Design for woodblock

• Cutting and sharpening tools

• Hand printing with a baren

• Single and multi-colour registration and printing

Various printing papers will also be shown which are suitable for hand-printing.

Sam Sosnowski

Sam has been involved in a wide range of art and design since graduating in Fine Art from the National Gallery School (Victoria). Sam currently divides his time between running his own commercial graphics studio, public art commissions, printmaking, painting and teaching life drawing and graphics at QUT in Brisbane. In 2012 Sam visited Japan and studied Japanese woodblock techniques and hand-printing with Richard Steiner in Kyoto. A solo Japanese inspired show in Byron Bay followed a year later. Course Requirements

The course is designed for beginners and for people who have a basic knowledge of lino printing and would like to try woodblock printing.

Informative notes with contacts to buy materials and further online lessons and Youtube videos will be given to allow you extend your learning further.

The following materials will be provided to you for a cost of $90 each student. Please bring this money to the first class.

2 x sheets Japanese Shina plywood plywood

Apron or old shirt

Set of water colour or guache tubes to print with

Small containers to mix colours

2 x 3B or 4B  pencils

sketch pad or butcher's paper for design work
