Master the traditional skills of creating beautiful objects in wood.
Begin with the rudiments of wood carving and sculpting: a few tools, a few pieces of wood and exercises that build step-by-step into some unique pieces. Get a feel of working with wood and try your hand at a wooden spoon, a decorative cheese board with sprays of leaves around the border, and a simple bowl. Bim will give you an introduction to a variety of hand tools and their uses, traditional woodworking techniques and terminology, plus supervised access to the machine room. .
As you gain confidence with the tools, you’ll begin to build a relationship with small scale carving and understand the subtle qualities of this therapeutic craft.
More experienced carvers are welcome to try their hand at a major sculpture of a subject of their own design.
Bim’s first memory of working with timber is making a boat out of a grape box when he was four years old. Alas this vessel did not survive its maiden voyage! Luckily Bim’s technical skills and eye for design have improved since the grape box years. In the following 45 years, Bim has dedicated his life to making fine timber furniture and sculpture. He has had 11 different workshops and is currently building his twelfth. Bim has taught woodwork at Camp Creative in Bellingen, through Adult and Community Education, with Bellingen Community Arts Council and is now teaching furniture design up to diploma level at the North Coast Institute of TAFE. He is also President of Designers Connect that has grown from the TAFE diploma course. Bim has exhibited widely, and has furniture and sculptures in collections throughout Australia’s east coast and some pieces bought by international collectors.
