Learn how frame your own artwork and photographs, bypassing expensive professional framing, by using practical techniques you can do at home.

You’ll get an introduction to the basic principles of picture framing, and go through the process of designing, planning, and making frames for yourself. Gain knowledge of how to frame different items - make stretcher bar frames for canvas and learn different ways to frame canvas paintings. You’ll discover the difference between framing canvas, prints and photography, and various hanging methods. Deb will teach you how to measure, cut and join moulding, cut different mats, cut glass and then assemble and finish your frame.

More about the course

You will learn how to:

  • measure cut and join moulding,
  • cut mats basic and more complicated,
  • cut glass, assemble and finish a frame as a unit.

Depending on the individual’s abilities more frames could be done in class time which will need to be organized pre camp class.  

Students will gain the knowledge of how to treat different items for framing.  Making stretchers bar frames for canvas and the different ways to frame canvas paintings, shadow boxes for paper toles etc.

You will be shown the different ways to frame cross stitches.

So, let’s get creative!

An intensive one day framing basics workshop is also available on Saturday 18 January, if you would like to frame works you may have created at Camp.

Deb Wenzel is a qualified picture framer, running a framing business for over fifteen years. She has taught do-it-yourself framing in adult and community classes, and primary schools for over twenty five years.

Course Requirements


A materials kit will be available at of cost of approx $40 which includes moulding, glass, backing, matt boards, hanging components, acid free hinging tape, v nails, stretcher bars, canvas print and class booklet. Extra Matt board off cut packs and component packs will be available also.


What do I need to bring?

  • Pencil and sharpener & eraser 
  • Ruler (no tape measures please)
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Utility knife (sharp point break-off blades are easier.) Avoid too small a knife please. 
  • A small hammer 6-8" not a builder’s one.
  • At least one 5"x7" photo or artwork, card to frame for the unit exercise.
  • There is a bit of maths involved not hard but feel free to bring a calculator if you wish.
