Hebel Block Carving

This workshop takes you into the world of three-dimensional thinking and is open to all with or without sculpting experience.

By approaching the process ‘a small step at a time’ you will be coached through taking a block of Hebel Stone from the raw state to a finished work of art. Your reference photos or drawings will be translated into sculpture-friendly terms to fit into the block and to suit the tools. Check out Adriaan's website www.vanderlugt.com.au

Adriaan Vanderlugt

Adriaan Vanderlugt was born in the Netherlands and grew up in Canada.  After graduating from High School in 1962, he began his art career as a graphic designer at an advertising agency in Hamilton Ontario.

After world travels on a motorcycle, Adriaan was inspired by Canadian Inuit stone carvings to begin carving in 1969.  His first sculptures were of wildlife … in soapstone, then marble, bone, wood and metal.  Now, in Queensland Australia, after more than four decades of making sculptures, his works are held in collections around the world.

In 2001 he was commissioned to create a series of Public Artworks in a Sculpture Symposium for the Whitsunday Centenary of Federation Celebrations.  In 2003 Adriaan was honoured to receive a Centenary Medal ‘for distinguished service to the arts’.

In 2012 he created a public artwork of ‘Five Woolbale Sheep’ for Quilpie in Western Queensland, and fashioned a ‘Bottle Tree’ to identify the Living Arts Centre in Blackall.

His sculptures have been accepted 4 times for Strand Ephemera and twice for Fringe Ephemera in Townsville.  SWELL Sculpture Festival in Currumbin at the Gold Coast has featured his work 6 times.

Adriaan’s Sculpture Episode for the TV show ‘Colour In Your Life’ was recorded in 2013, and as it has gone around the world, has proven to be very popular. Check out his website www.vanderlugt.com.au
