More about the course

Adriaan will take you through the processes of how to design your finished product, helping you translate your reference photos or drawings into sculpture-friendly terms to fit into the block and to suit the tools. By approaching the process ‘a small step at a time’ you will be coached through taking a block of Hebel Stone from the raw state to a finished work of art.Your reference photos or drawings will be translated into sculpture-friendly terms to fit into the block and to suit the tools.

Adriaan Vanderlugt

Adriaan Vanderlugt began his art career as a graphic designer at an advertising agency in Canada. In 1969, whilst travelling the world on a motorcycle, he was inspired by Canadian Inuit stone carvings to begin carving wildlife, in soapstone, then marble, bone, wood and metal.  He has completed commissions of public art commissions all over Australia, and in 2003 received a Centenary Medal ‘for distinguished service to the arts’.

 

 


Course Requirements

Hebel Block Carving

You will use 2 blocks  600 x 300 x 200 mm. Cost is $65 payable to the tutor payable to the tutor on the first day.

HEBEL Stone is also known as aerated concrete.  To carve Hebel stone, we can use wood working tools (they can be cleaned and resharpened afterwards).
