Start with the basics of Japanese ink painting or Sumi-E. Get an introduction to the four treasures: ink, inkstone, brushes and papers. Start with the practice of calligraphy to learn brush skills and design. Study the brushstrokes needed to paint the fruit, birds and insects of the summer season.

More about the course

Paint the classic subject of the pine tree, as well as touch on contemporary and creative styles of ink painting. Learn the traditional process of stretching a painting onto another sheet of rice paper to make the artwork more durable and ready for display and framing.

Riki Allsop

Riki Allsop found her passion for oriental ink painting as a young woman in Japan, studying with Japanese and Australian artists Richard Liddicut, Andre Sollier, Andrew Lo and Iseko Arai. As a practicing artist, her works can be found in private and public collections in Australia, Europe and Japan.

Course Requirements

All equipment and materials are provided for this course and material cost of $30.- payable to tutor at commencement of the course. If you have your own equipment for Ink Brush Painting please bring it along!
