This hands-on jewellery course is an opportunity for aspiring silversmiths to design and make their own handmade jewellery from 100% recycled sterling silver.
Be self-directed to work on silver jewellery projects of your choice, making a range of stone set sterling silver rings, earrings and pendants. Become proficient with all the basic tools and equipment within a jeweller’s studio. Learn traditional jewellery making techniques such as saw-piercing, drilling, annealing, ring making, stone setting, polishing and soldering while creating jewellery of your own design.
This workshop is suitable for beginners and has a strong focus on design and creativity. We’ll steer clear of cookie-cutter production and allow room for you to design meaningful and beautiful pieces of wearable art that are as unique as you are.
Mac will take you beyond the usual cookie-cutter production, to teach you conceptual jewellery design skills. This course allows room for you to design meaningful and beautiful pieces of wearable art that are as unique as you are. You’ll walk away with the skills and techniques you need to continue to develop your practice at home.
Participants will build their skills, making a range of jewellery pieces:
• A sterling silver ring
• A sterling silver pendant
A self -directed silver jewellery project of your choosing.
You will learn professional jewellery making skills including:
Use of professional trade tools – jeweller’s saw, jeweller’s files, and stone setting
The complex process of jewellery silver soldering
Conceptual jewellery design skills.
Ian 'Mac' McArthur’s experience as a designer, manufacturer and teacher gives him the ability to bring out the inherent creativity within each student, from the initial conceptual drawing through to the construction phase, and onto the polish and final finish. He has taught many students, in both stone cutting and jewellery manufacturing, with many continuing on in a professional capacity.

The materials cost will be $160 per participant which will cover the first three days while you make your pendant, ring and earrings/cufflinks as well as your self-directed projects for the remaining 2 days. This is payable to the tutor on the first day of the course.
