Art of Drawing Birds

Free yourself to draw birds, by developing a sound understanding of their structure.

This course will involve field and classroom sketching to build up a sound knowledge of how a bird is put together, using taxidermy specimens as models and photographic references.

Over the week, you’ll complete a series of drawings ranging from studies through to finished artworks of birds.

With hands-on practical application and tutor demonstrations, you’ll complete a series of exercises embracing anatomy, musculature, form and shape.

Course Info

You will also work with tonal studies, line drawing, light, shade and texture. Work will also include exploring colour using coloured pencil, wash and pen and ink.

Some drawing experience is required to participate in this course.

Please bring the following on your first day of class:

  • Pencils – graphite. One of each: B, 2B, 4B, 6B
  • Erasers – plastic eraser, kneadable eraser
  • Pens – 2 Art Line pens:  size: 0.2
  • Brushes – soft brushes (any size)
  • Ink – 1 bottle of black ink
  • Water container
  • Roll of paper towel

Other pencils

  • Coloured Pencils. Reasonable quality set.
  • Conte Crayon (Rust colour)
  • 2 Highlighters: (Light blue and Lime Green)

Paper

  • One ream of photocopy paper (white)
  • One A3 sketch pad (cartridge)

Note: if you have other pencils or pastels you’d like to use, bring them to the course.

Trevor Weekes

Trevor Weekes is a practising artist and educator. He is a lecturer in Natural History Illustration at The School of Design, Communication & Information Technology, University of Newcastle. He exhibits regularly, with both solo and group shows throughout Australia.

His art practice embraces multi disciplines, specifically drawing, painting, sculpture, artist book production and, more recently animation. Music is also an area he has been involved in, producing a sound piece to CD, and incorporating sound in several of his installations. A major topic of interest is human and animal anatomy, focusing on birds specifically and flight.
