Join us in my workshop, ‘Abstract Wildflowers’, where I will guide you in creating a one-of-a-kind confetti background design to complement your hand painted and free motion stitched flowers.
This workshop offers a plethora of creative possibilities and unique perspectives that will surely inspire and delight participants.
Participants will create a unique background and select an individual vase design then create several painted and stitched flowers to arrange and thread paint to enhance their project.

AGE: Suitable for ages 17 to adult

Please bring the following on your first day of class:
FABRIC:
Approx *50cm x 60cm piece of white, black or coloured background fabric… If you
choose a white background fabric there could be some colour bleed for the flowers when we make the background, but this can also add to the unique surfaces.Approx *50cm x 50cm white cotton fabric to paint on that has been washed to remove
the sizing stiffness in it please.A variety scraps of red, pink, green, purple and yellow recycle dress style fabrics to chop up. Also be aware of your scrap fabrics as some dyed fabrics might run into a
white background…. this has happened which did add interest onto the background.20cm x 20cm Variety of green leaf fabrics and stems this could also be printed leaves design fabric.
20cm x 20cm flower printed fabric it’s good to have different size flowers (optional)
20cmx 20cm vase fabric this could be patterned or plain (optional)
20cm x 10cm Visoflix fusible web optional in case you need it
SUGGESTED THREADS:
Bring cotton/poly threads to match the fabric or your flower fabric choice eg. white or black, pink, red, purple, yellow, olive green and other green
Thread colour to match your background fabric
GENERAL:
Sewing machine in good working order with darning foot attachment and drop the feed dog’s facility. Also, the table attachment for your machine and don’t forget your electrical cord.
If you have never free-motion stitched on your machine please have a practice or go to your dealer for tips, I do not know all machines and will do my best to help you.Spare sewing machine needles I suggest topstitch or jeans needles
Sharp scissors and normal sewing requirements
Long style quilting pins
Small sharp scissors
Pencil and paper
Fine black fabric marker (optional)
An old towel
If you have one - bring a small paint brush and I will also have some spares to share in class
Small sheet of plastic to paint on always a good idea
Some paper towel for painting spills
Your camera
There will be paint to share as part of your kit
And bring your spirit of adventure to explore textile art!
This class has an extra materials cost of $55, which is payable directly to the tutor.

Caroline Sharkey
Embellishing the Surface is Caroline’s way of creating textures that are interesting and change the way You as the viewer look at fabric. Stitching into the surface gives her a changing palette and adding colours brings the artwork and new fabric surfaces to life.
“In her art practise her approach is to chop the fabrics into small confetti styled pieces, and then mix the colours and textures to create beautiful new fabrics.
Caroline travels to teach her unique techniques of fabric embellishments and many different textile workshops. She loves to inspire and encourage everyone to experience the creative side of Textile Art. Teaching and exhibiting internationally, Caroline is also a judge at quilt shows in Australia and internationally.
Caroline owns The Digital Cloth an online E-magazine bringing artists, craftspeople and their art practise stories to readers 4-5 times a year in this popular magazine. The Digital Cloth has readers from over 20 countries and is growing every year.
Caroline regularly curates 2 exhibitions that help showcase new and experienced textile artists and art quilters show their work Australia wide.
The Desert Threads Art Prize challenge for the Uluru Retreat, ‘Sewing Up a Storm in the Desert’ every 2 years. The Coastal Threads Art Prize for the Urunga Coastal Retreat annually, these collections travel for exhibitions and promoting Textile Art both here in Australia and overseas on tour.
