Starting with various small landscape studies, you will learn about the various technicalities and principles of painting, and will work towards completing a large major work by the end of the week, developed with the array of learned skills.

DAY ONE
Detailed introduction and explanation of Painting fundamentals, focusing on landscape painting in particular.
Live painting demonstration of Tonal Drawing by Jason of first group study (subject provided).
Commencement of first group study tonal drawing, delving into the various elements of painting theory, most notably composition, and constructing a drawing using basic forms.
Demonstration of colour mixing, blocking in phase, tonal relationships, value, and temperature.
DAY TWO
Demonstration of second study by Jason.
Previous works continued, and second/third studies to commence, exploring and experimenting further with the painting fundamentals discussed and demonstrated by Jason.
Refining creative direction in preparation for the major work. Preparing major work canvas, priming and sanding.
DAY THREE
Further experimentation and execution of painting fundamentals, bringing various studies to completion, and honing in of artistic vision in preparation for the major work.
Continued preparation of the large canvas for major work.
DAY FOUR
Begin major work, subject to be provided by students.
Step by step building of major work using the learned methods and skills.
DAY FIVE
Final stages of major work, bringing paintings to as much of a completion as possible.
Discussing and reflecting on the weeks work, and all of the learned skills.
Personal discussions about further creative direction.

Please bring the following on your first day of class:
PAINT
One set of Oil paints comprising of warms and cools of every primary colour, plus Titanium white, as well as acrylic Burnt Sienna and Titanium White for initial tonal drawings.

High quality paints are well advised, as the colour theory work explored during the week requires high pigment quality in paints for the most to be gained from the course.

Series of synthetic and non-synthetic brushes, both rounds, flats and filberts, long-handed or short-handed.
Recommended sizes- 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.
A varied array of small brushes for fine detail, mid-size brushes for the bulk of painting work, and a large brush for washes, blurring reflections, painting skies and establishing large areas.

4x small to medium-sized canvas with landscape, horizontal dimensions for initial studies
1x Large canvas with landscape dimensions, to be primed and sanded in preparation for major work. Ideal size 500 x 700 mm.
1 litre tub of Acrylic Gesso for priming major work canvas
Large brush for Gesso application
One single-edged razor blade or square of fine sandpaper for preparing the major work canvas in between layers of Gesso. (These items can be found at Bunnings Warehouse or a hardware store)

SOLVENTS/MEDIUMS
Two large palettes, preferably made of glass or wood, which can be bought from art stores or made at home - Large palettes are essential as they provide adequate space for colour mixing
1 Bottle of Odourless Solvent (Odourless varieties of solvent are highly recommended to limit the fumes in the room)
1 bottle of Oil Painting medium, ie Linseed Oil, to be used in addition to Odourless Solvent (optional)
2 jars (with lids) or painters cups for the solvent and medium to be placed in
SUBJECTS
Two painting subjects will be provided to everyone by Jason for the first two studies.
In addition, students are to provide two or three photographs of personally chosen landscape subjects. These are to be used for your major work and possible further studies. Choose a subject with sentimental and inspirational resonance for you, so your painting will serve as a portal through time, a memento on the wall, and a window into reverie.
This class has an extra materials cost of $10, which is payable directly to the tutor.
