Making a Mini Musical

$500.00

Be prepared to sing, dance & act!

Your tutor chooses a section of a mini musical (e.g. Matilda the Musical, Peter Pan Junior, a Pantomime with chosen songs etc.) and gives a printout of the playscript & song lyrics/sheet music to each student.

Students learn conventions of a musical & apply their newly taught skills to the musical libretto (playscript) & songs (music). Sing the music, stage the scenes and dance the routines with the help of your director (tutor) and assistant director (tutor’s assistant).

Students are creatively empowered as they are given many opportunities to choreograph their own dances/movements and their own ideas of staging. Collaboration is highly encouraged, rather than being solely directed the whole week.

We work through mindfulness techniques to master stage nerves, brainstorming sessions to value collaboration, breakout groups to empower their creativity & reflection/debriefs to have focus on great communication and to understand the vision of our project (style of our musical and what we wish the audience to gain from it).

The focus is on skill development (communication, creativity, collaboration & critical thinking) rather than gathering resources such as props, costumes, make up & sets. Students will be asked to wear drama blacks and only if they'd like, they can wear accessories for costume. This will not be provided nor will it be a focus.

Basically, we combine spoken dialogue, acting, singing, and dance in fun and outrageous ways to perform to an audience on the last day!

AGE: Suitable for ages 10 to 17

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate to Advanced - Suited to those who have some experience, but are looking to learn new techniques and explore more complex projects. Also suited to those who has been practicing in this area for an extended period of time and are confident with techniques and self-directed projects.

SCHEDULE: Full Days - Monday 13 to Friday 17 January 2025 - 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

YOUR COURSE TUTOR

Hannah Date

Originally hailing from Griffith NSW, the country girl went to the big smoke (Sydney), to train at the Australian Institute of Music in Musical Theatre.

Since then she has taught all 3 disciplines (singing, dancing & acting) within Performing Arts programs in schools, and as extra curricular activities throughout the Hunter region. After directing, choreographing and vocal coaching an array of stage plays & musicals, she thought it was time to bring the fun even further up the coast which lands her as Director of the local Performing Arts Academy, 'Encore!'. "Our aim at Encore is to provide Performing Arts classes to grow kids’ self-esteem and performance skills such as articulation, musicality, body language, characterisation, active listening, spontaneous reactions, teamwork, responding to music & narrative, playbuilding, and script interpretation.”

The teachings of drama and music can help students improve confidence, resilience, creativity, speech and ability to talk in front of peers - all valuable skills that students will be able to use for the rest of their day-to-day lives.

I'm thrilled to be bringing a jam packed week of fun to Bellingen Shire, with a focus on developing these skills WHILST staging a mini musical (you know....it is about the process, not the product!) See you in the rehearsal space :)

Bachelor of Music (Music Theatre); Master of Teaching (Drama); Certified Yoga Teacher.
